Birthdays and Bookclubs
Its been a busy week of celebrations and get togethers. Last week I celebrated my birthday with a number of events. I had dinner at home with my family on the night of my birthday and then Saturday had lunch out at Pearsons, a really fabulous restaurant on the beach in Whitstable. It was such a beautiful day, blue skies, sunny but really cold and so after lunch we all headed down to the beach to throw stones into the sea. It was a great birthday and I received some really lovely presents.
This week I hosted the first evening of my book club. It is something i have wanted to do for sometime and after quite a lot of organising, Wednesday night there were 9 women gathered together in my living room excited at the prospect of doing something new and different. It was such a brilliant evening, the 9 of us didn't all know each other so it was great to meet new people, the only thing we had in common is that we were all mothers. As the host of the first evening I had prepared drinks and nibbles and printed out the synopsis of the 6 books shortlisted for the Man Booker prize for our perusal. Even though the winner had been chosen i thought it was a great starting point. After much deliberation we went with The Quickening Maze by Adam Foulds, a dark and atmospheric book set in an Asylum and following the lives of poets John Clare and Alfred Tennyson.
We had a hilarious evening and much wine was drunk as we determined the ground rules for our book club and came up with some ridiculous names for the blog that i am going to set up. We have 6 weeks to read our book before we meet again so I am off to the bookshop this weekend and cannot wait until we meet again.
